Cazenovia Resident and Nationally Recognized Artist, Jane Egan debuts a new body of artwork in Central New York for the first time in over ten years. Egan will have 22 pieces on exhibit and for sale at The Gallery of CNY in Cazenovia starting Friday, April 25, 2008 through Sunday, May 18, 2008.
The opening night reception is open to the public on Friday, April 25, 2008. The artist will be on-hand from 5:00pm-8:00pm to answer any questions and to talk about her work. The gallery will be open that night until 10:00pm.
Egan's inspiration for her work originally came from the artist Joseph Cornell whose surreal box constructions using found objects met notoriety during the 1930's and 1940's. According to a press release for a show at the Everson Museum, "Egan has transformed the genre into a vehicle for the presentation of personal reflection on her travels, commitment to social concern and love of nature and interest in Americana."
Although Jane is now nationally recognized for her box assemblages, back in the 1970's, she was pounding the pavement like many artists. While traveling with her husband who was on a business trip in Chicago, she went door-to-door to all the galleries in Chicago to show them her work. It was during her final gallery visit that weekend at the prestigious Worthington Gallery that she was granted her first ever solo show. That show sold out.
Since then, Worthington Gallery in Chicago has continued to represent Egan. She was also picked up in Manhattan by CDS Gallery and in Houston by Hooks-Epstein Gallery where she had solo shows. In 1979 and 1993, Egan had one-person exhibits at the Everson Museum in Syracuse. She has participated in group exhibits throughout the years including: Munson-Proctor Museum of Art, Cooperstown International, Art Oversees in New York and Penrose Gallery in Nantucket.
During her career, Egan has not only shown her work but also supported the arts. She was instrumental in creating and maintaining the St. David's Invitational art show in Dewitt, NY in 1975. Since then, the St. David's show, giving local artists of the highest caliber a place to show their work, has grown to become known as the most prestigious invitational in the Syracuse area. Egan also has been a member and supporter of the Associated Artists Group of Syracuse for many years.
At Egan's next one-person show at The Gallery of CNY, she will present 18 new box pieces that are set with a variety of materials and sealed with glass. Each piece has its own personality, some referencing time and place and others referencing history and literature. The viewer cannot help but to be drawn into each piece's intimate setting and to contemplate the story within. Each of the boxes is hand-made; many are painted with pure color. Each has a balanced combination of found objects, small antiquities, empheral elements such magazine clippings and paper cut-outs and 'arte povera' (poor materials) such as twigs and wire. One box includes a small lake painting by Egan placed within the piece.
Egan, like so many artists, refuses to be put in a box. She continues to push and expand her art and includes in this show a handcrafted free-standing weather vane replica, the second in a series. She also has two free-standing constructions made of wood that could easily be mistaken for metal. She completes showing her ability to think outside the box with a mobile hanging from the ceiling, perfectly balanced using antique fishing lures and bobbers, and arranged with a stunning array of color and craft.
Also on April 25, 2005, Cazenovia celebrates its first 'Spring Open' with two other art receptions: "Ceramics: Into the Garden" opens at Chameleon Gallery and "New Designs by Susan Machamer" is at Cazenovia Jewelry. Plus many of Cazenovia's stores will stay open late including Amanda Bury Antiques, Cazenovia Artisians, Cazenovia Flowers, The Cheshire Cat, Isabella's, Lavender Blue, Lillie Bean and Tizzy's & Sally's.
