Self-taught artist Joseph W. Sosnowski at The Gallery of CNY.
Artist’s Statement: I always use several layers of oil paint. I particularly like working with oil because of the time it remains workable. Using layers and glazes allows the painting to gain more depth and feeling, producing a work which evokes an earlier time. The artists who have inspired me most are George Inness and John D. Barrow; Inness with his use of glazes, and Barrow with his location selection and color pallet. I try to evoke a feeling of serenity in my paintings, which limit any reference to modernization. I want the viewer to see the painting as true upstate, a work which could be a view of 19th Century Central New York. I spend a long time selecting the perfect location for each painting, I often chose scenes for their ability to draw the viewer in and seeking subject matter that I feel perfectly represents the CNY area. To me my paintings and the scenes bring me back home to when I was young, a time of innocence and carefree living.
Artist Biography: (American artist, born 1971-) Joseph Sosnowski was born in Syracuse New York in 1971. Son of an Air Force officer, his family was stationed in Europe until 1979. In 1979 he returned to Syracuse where he grew up until graduating High School in 1989. Following the path of his father, he also joined the Air Force and was stationed in South Carolina. Joseph spent most of his life around art and antiques which he grew to appreciate, and he became fascinated with art. While living in Tacoma Washington, he began collecting art, which led to becoming an art dealer. The purchase of an original George Inness oil painting is what led to the next stage of becoming an artist. Joseph was struck by the beauty and imagery that Inness brought out in his paintings and began studying every aspect of his work. It was around 2004 that Joseph purchased some art supplies and decided to give painting with oil a try. Immediately he knew this is what he wanted to do. In 2007 he was encouraged to start selling his work instead of giving it away to family, and the first sale brought such a response that he is now moving forward with his career. Joseph Draws his inspiration from the Central New York landscape and surrounding Finger lakes. Currently living Washington State, he is transitioning to full time painting and exhibiting.
